Anime Review :Dead Leaves

Hello it is me again with an anime I am going to review is the film Dead Leaves from the studio Production I.G and directed by Hiroyuki Imaishi who worked on series for Gainax such as FLCL, Neon Genesis Evangelion, Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and Panty, & Stocking with Garterbelt.  Anyway back to this series, The plot is about the two main characters Retro and Pandy who woke up on nude on earth without any memory of their past and they decided to go on a crime spree for some reason.  Right after they were apprehended by the police and sent to a "prison" with advanced technology that exists on what is left of the moon in this film.  The both of them had eventually found out the so called prison was used as a lab where there were clones made and turned into weapons.  Soon enough they had acquired assistance for their fellow prisoners to try and escape the so called prison.

The positive points are where the animation style is reminiscent of the anime FLCL because of the fast-paced action  and and the tripy-ness of the scenes where a random green harry baby with speakers on it's head is shooting the main antagonist the warden of the "prison".  Another good part was how the color and the shading was done because it had reminded me of the bright colors used in Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.  An example of this would we shown in the image above and it some how reminds me of how the shading makes the colors show out more.  Another thing that is is anime reminds me of FLCL is that the camera angles during all the scenes made everything more "edgy".  The music was set right with each part of the film but it only added to the action from the film.

The down points of this anime were that there were too many holes in the characters.  For example there was an issue that they only know about their past because it was told to them and they went on whet they known and not remembered.  There was another issue where there was one scene where it was re-used.  One more issue is that I felt that the ending was cut off and I was expecting more.

The summary of the positives and negatives of Dead Leaves are:

• Great animation.
• Great way on color design.
• A few scenes re-used.
• Needs a better back story.

Over all I would suggest that this anime should be recommended for fans of FLCL and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. I would also suggest renting or looking at the trailers first before you go out and buy this film, than after think about buying this film.  If you like anime with more story, I suggest you do not buy this film.  Although if your a fan of this director's work buy this, you will enjoy it.
